dispatch
The folks who work in dispatch are on the true front line of first responders. They answer emergency 911 calls in our area, determine the nature of the call and route it to the proper agency, or take appropriate action to complete the call for service. They also dispatch police personnel using radio and telecommunications equipment and maintain radio contact with on-duty units. Learn more about our dispatch unit.
property & evidence unit
Our property and evidence unit maintains the chain of custody records for all property collected by APD from the time of submission until final disposition. The unit works collaboratively with a number of other agencies including ATF, FBI, DEA, AFD, US Attorney’s office, local District Attorneys, municipal prosecutors, and many other local and federal law enforcement agencies. Records Unit
This group of employees manages the information officers create such as citations and police reports. Employees take reports of non-emergency incidents from citizens. They fill records requests from the public ensuring compliance with municipal and state guidelines regarding the release of information.
Classification and Compliance Unit
This unit evaluates and ensures that reports written by APD personnel are accurately classified by crime using the standards set forth by the FBI in relation to crime analysis and crime reporting. They also ensure all employees and visitors of APD comply with state and federal guidelines regarding the protection of and access to criminal justice information.
The employment process

Satisfactory drug screening at the time of hire.
Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
Successful applicants will be invited to test. Testing will include satisfactory passing of the Nelson/Denny Comprehension Exam and an Oral Board (Interview).
Passing results of the Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam are valid for one (1) year from the date of the tests. The test scores/results may be used when applying for other positions within APD. Current APD employees are exempt from the Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam.
If selected for hire, appointment to this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory passing an extensive background and financial check, and a drug screen.
If selected for hire, an appointment in this position requires Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) security clearance and access, and also FBI National Crime Information Center (NCIC) security clearance and access within thirty (30) days of hire. If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain these clearances and accesses within thirty (30) days of hire, he/she will be terminated.
All required licenses and certifications must remain current for the duration of employment.
If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment
